A 10-month-old baby accidentally ingested fentanyl he found while crawling around the playground in their local neighborhood.
Tech boss Ivan Matkovic, 35, was called by his children’s nanny to the George Moscone playground after the baby started experiencing difficulty breathing.
By the time he got there, his son was already surrounded by paramedics.
Matkovic, the founder of consulting tech company Spendgo, was informed by his children’s nanny that one of the babies wasn’t breathing properly.
Paramedics rushed to the scene but didn’t find anything obstructing the baby’s ability to breathe.
According to reports, paramedics administered Narcan to reverse the effects of a fentanyl overdose.
Only seconds later, the baby started breathing and crying again.
Hospital staff later ran tests and confirmed that the child had fentanyl in his system.
The Department of Parks and Recreation searched the park that evening but did not find drugs or paraphernalia. Police determined that the likeliest exposure was powder.
Matkovic said fentanyl exposure is now something that they will have to add to the list of health threats to their sons.
“I just wanted to let people know that along with coyotes and RSV and COVID, this is another thing to add to you checklist of things that you’re looking out for, because we weren’t,” he said.
He also praised the nanny’s quick thinking during the incident.
“Really if it wasn’t for her and her fast reactions, we might not be with our son today,” Matkovic expressed.
“It’s not just dealers and people you don’t know who are impacted by this, it’s tipping over into the broader populace, and it feels like it needs that kind of COVID-like attention, and it doesn’t seem like it’s getting that.”
