Following a SWAT team raid, a one-year-old baby boy was reportedly injured after falling on a police car.
According to the police department and the child’s family, the Incident begin when Pensacola Florida Police Department executed an early morning search warrant in connection to a January 22 shooting incident at the home of a man and his two young children who were not criminal suspects.
Corey Marioneaux Jr., 22, the child’s father is charged with attempted murder after opening fire on one of the officers who rammed his door in. The man’s friends and family say he believed the officer was an intruder.
A spokesperson for the Pensacola Police Department releases an internal review of the incident is underway. We will not answer any questions or provide any documents until the review was completed.
Based on an arrest report obtained by the ABC affiliate WEAR-TV, 5:00 am on February 3, the officers executed the search warrant at Marioneaux Jr.’s home knocking and announcing their presence for approximately 10 seconds before forcing their way in on Marioneaux property.
Police said Marioneaux Jr. opened fire at the officer who rammed his door, striking the officer’s shield and prompting the officer to return fire. The baby boy’s father’s family and friends told WEAR-TV he is a licensed gun owner.
He opened fire that morning because he thought that the officers were intruders. An arrest report obtained by the outlet said the father already made spontaneous statements in the presence of the police and said he was sorry.
Court records say that neither Marioneaux nor the officers were injured in the incident. Later that day, the boy’s father was arrested and released on a $50,000 bond.
Meanwhile, the infant fell out of the backseat of a vehicle while investigators were waiting for the children’s relatives to arrive. In a police statement, one investigator opened the car door to get inside not knowing that the baby boy was leaning on the door of the car.
Moiya Dixon, the children’s mother, lives at another address and received a call from the authorities, she said: “I get my baby and I see his face and it’s almost unrecognizable compared to how he looked when I left him last.”
WEAR-TV showed the photo of the baby boy with wounds, scrapes, and bruises on his face. Marioneaux Jr. is now charged with the attempted murder of a law enforcement officer. While his family was shocked at the police’s handling of both search warrant execution and the children.
Dixon told WEAR-TV: “On top of all Marioneaux Jr.’s charges he also had to think, now somebody hurt my baby. My 3-year-old is traumatized, he keeps having to tell the story of what his 3-year-old brain can comprehend of what happened to his baby brother. That is horrifying.”
The Pensacola Police Department has launched an investigation after parents say a child was hurt in its custody following a raid at a private residence.
Marioneaux has reportedly lost his job over the incident. It was unclear if he had retained an attorney, Escambia County court records show that Marioneaux is scheduled to be arraigned on February 25.
Marioneaux does not have a criminal record and the Pensacola Police Department said he is not even a suspect in the January shooting investigation that led police to his home that morning. Dixon also says she has no idea why police would want information in his home.
