Anthony Hopkins has opened up about his addiction to alcohol and revealed he’s now been sober for nearly five decades.
The 82-year-old Hollywood legend and Oscar-winning actor shared an inspiring message on Instagram where he told his fans to be kind to themselves and be proud of their lives.
In his message to the world, The Silence of the Lambs star revealed he was celebrating 47 years of sobriety while insisting his past addiction to alcohol nearly cost him his life.
“I just want to wish you a happy new year, and also to say I’m celebrating 47 years today of sobriety,” he said.
“I am a recovering alcoholic, and to you out there, know that there are people struggling… Be kind to yourself, be proud of your life.”
The 82-year-old actor went on to claim that he found himself in a “desperate situation in despair” that probably brought him near death’s door at the time of his addiction to alcohol.
“It was a kind of mental, physical condition called alcoholism… addiction,” Hopkins added as he recalled one day in 1975 when he realized “something was really wrong” with him.
Following his decision to speak out unfiltered, the legendary actor received lots of praise from fellow celebrities including Hugh Jackman, Alec Baldwin, Naomi Campbell, Amanda Kloots, Trudie Styler, and more.
Hopkins’ message to the world comes two years after he urged young people not to give up and to “keep fighting.”
“You young people, don’t give up, just keep in there, just keep fighting. Be bold and mighty forces will come to your aid,” he previously said.
