Alec Baldwin will continue filming the western movie Rust after accidentally killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on set.
Hutchins was shot dead on the movie’s set in Santa Fe last year after Baldwin picked up a prop gun, which contained live bullets, and the weapon misfired during rehearsal.
Following the photography director’s tragic death, her husband, Matthew Hutchins, filed a wrongful death lawsuit which has been dropped now that the 64-year-old actor reached a confidential settlement with the victim’s family.
“Throughout this difficult process, everyone has maintained the specific desire to do what is best for Halyna’s son. We are grateful to everyone who contributed to the resolution of this tragic and painful situation,” Baldwin announced.
Confirming the news was also Mr Hutchins who said:
“We have reached a settlement, subject to court approval, for our wrongful death case against the producers of Rust, including Alec Baldwin and Rust Movie Productions, LLC.
“As part of that settlement, our case will be dismissed. The filming of Rust, which I will now executive produce, will resume with all the original principal players on board in January 2023.”
According to the reports, Hutchins, Baldwin, and Rust producers agreed that Halyna’s death was a terrible accident.
Though the civil lawsuit against Baldwin was dropped, the actor still faces a criminal investigation and, potentially, criminal charges.
The DA’s office has since Baldwin’s announcement confirmed that “no one is above the law” and that the investigation will continue even though the settlement was reached.
“The proposed settlement announced today in Matthew Hutchins’ wrongful death case against Rust movie producers, including Alec Baldwin, in the death of Halyna Hutchins will have no impact on District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altweis’ ongoing investigation or her ultimate decision whether to file criminal charges in the case,” the office confirmed.
“While civil suits are settled privately and often involve financial awards, criminal cases deal only in facts. If the facts and evidence warrant criminal charges under New Mexico law then charges will be brought. No one is above the law.”
Meanwhile, the Rust crew announced that the filming of the movie will continue at the beginning of next year, whereas Hutchins will reportedly executive produce the film.
“We are pleased the parties came together to resolve this matter, which, subject to court approval, marks an important step forward in celebrating Halyna’s life and honoring her work,” Rust Movie Productions, LLC, announced.
