Alec Baldwin has been cleared of all criminal charges following new evidence.
The embattled 65-year-old Hollywood actor was previously charged with involuntary manslaughter after accidentally shooting and killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the Western movie Rust in Santa Fe, New Mexico, back in late 2021.
While prosecutors initially remained determined to bring Baldwin and other people involved in the incident to justice, new evidence has seen all criminal charges against the director wiped off.
According to The Wall Street Journal, a source with knowledge of the investigation revealed that the charges were dropped after it was found that the gun Baldwin was handed by the Rust armorer might have gone off without the trigger being pulled.
The source also suggested that the gun was modified to the extent that it was able to fire rounds without the trigger getting pulled.
Though the FBI previously thrashed his claims, Baldwin insisted he didn’t pull the trigger since the beginning of the investigation.
“We are pleased with the decision to dismiss the case against Alec Baldwin and we encourage a proper investigation into the facts and circumstances of this tragic accident,” the actor’s attorneys said in a statement obtained by DailyMail.com.
The Santa Fe District Attorney’s Office has yet to officially comment on the decision.
Meanwhile, it has also come to light that Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the disgraced armorer who worked on the Rust set, still faces criminal charges after handing a gun loaded with live bullets to Baldwin without ensuring it was safe to use.
