Several people were shot in an Alabama church after a gunman stormed the building and opened fire on innocent worshippers.
The shooting took place at Saint Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Birmingham, Vestavia Hills, where an armed man opened fire at around 6.20 pm on Thursday.
According to the reports, one person was killed and at least two were injured after gunfire erupted inside the church during a ‘Boomers Potluck’ event.
“At approximately 6:22 PM Central Time the Vestavia Hills Police Department responded to Saint Stephen’s Episcopal Church located at 3775 Crosshaven Drive Vestavia Hills, AL on a call of an active shooter,” the local police revealed in a statement.
They also confirmed that the shooter has since been arrested.
“Multiple law enforcement agencies and fire departments responded to the scene. The VHPD confirms multiple people were shot. The suspect is in custody,” the statement added.
It is believed that the victims of the shooting were transported to Birmingham’s UAB hospital for additional treatment.
Recalling the ordeal, Rev. Kelley Hudlow called the shooting “scary” as she admitted she didn’t know how many people exactly were in the church at the time of the event.
“There were folks at church. There has been a shooting, and there are folks that have been injured. We are working to get more information, to take care of the people who were there,” the reverend said.
“We are praying for healing and safety for all of those who have been impacted and affected. We are praying for everyone involved and we are trying to get as much information about what happened as we can get.”
Hudlow has since also urged the community to “come together” through thoughts and prayers during these challenging times.
The shooting remains under investigation.
