A legendary actor who appeared in The Pirates of the Caribbean has passed away.
Sergio Calderón was a famed Mexican actor who died from natural causes at the age of 77 after appearing in over forty Hollywood movies over the span of his six-decade acting career.
Besides his role as Captain Vallenueva in The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Calderón also secured roles in the likes of Men In Black, The Ruins, and The Missing.
Just days prior to his passing, the longtime actor opened up about his career and revealed he’s always loved playing villains in Hollywood films.
“I love to play those types of characters, because people really hate me,” he said in an interview with The Los Angeles Times.
“They tell me in the streets how much they hate me. But to me, that is my success. Because that means I was able to convince people with what I performed.”
Calderón, who was born in a small Mexican village, made his way to Mexico City where he began performing before the age of ten.
In 1970, the aspiring actor landed his first role in the movie The Bridge in the Jungle and his career flourished after the moved to Los Angeles nine years later.
“If I can make them cry and I can make them laugh, then maybe I’m a good actor,” Calderón added in his recent interview as he recalled a female telling him that his performance left her in tears.
Following the saddening news of the actor’s passing, social media was flooded with tributes and kind messages from Calderón’s fans.
“Sergio Calderon another fine talent and his great spirit and legacy lives,” one wrote.
“Rest in Peace, Sergio. I look forward to hearing memorials from your peers,” another said.
A third expressed: “I’m so sad Sergio Calderón has passed. I just read that wonderful article about him in the LA Times too. I always think of him as El Cajon the river pirate from The A-Team.”
Our thoughts are with Sergio’s loved ones, including his wife Karen Dakin, during this challenging time.
