Chelsea Becker from Hanford in California is currently under police custody after she intentionally killed her unborn fetus.
With a $2 million bail attached to her name, since the year 2019, courts have continued to wrangle over her charges. Moreover, news reports went on to claim how California’s Supreme Court declined to bring a halt to her prosecution after a legal appearance was issued recently.
According to police officers, Chelsea intentionally took Meth because the harmful substance was found in the baby’s blood. Moreover, doctors predicted how the mum was about 8 and a half months pregnant at that particular time.
While the 26-year-old did boldly claim that she took the drug while being pregnant, she is yet to plead guilty to the murder. On Monday, the court rejected the challenge against her charges that was brought on by the state’s attorney general, Xavier Becerra, reported the San Francisco Chronicle.
Meanwhile, Becerra who was nominated by president Biden himself to lead the country’s department of health and human services mentioned his opposition against the persecution. According to him, such incidents like these could possibly prevent pregnant women from getting help for their addictions.
In the same way, he went on to add such a case could also possibly prompt more scrutiny by the law when it comes to miscarriages as well as stillbirths.
On the other hand, supporters also argued how the country should go about treating substance abuse as a medical condition and therefore should not look down upon it as a crime. Meanwhile, it still is being argued how there isn’t substantial evidence to claim whether meth actually does result in stillbirths or not.
Some against the 26-year-old’s crime mentioned how her case was simply about a woman who deliberately ate meth so as to cause harm to her fetus. For this reason, she should be punished.
