A mother sparked a heated online debate after posting a TikTok video of her 6-month-old baby getting her ears pierced.
In the TikTok video, the woman’s baby can be seen lying back in a chair while having her ear pierced.
“6 months call for ear piercings,” the woman captioned the video.
The baby can be seen crying and kicking her legs while her mother holds her down in the chair.
“Stop using piercing guns on your babies!” the mother said in the video. “Get them pierced at a tattoo or piercing shop.”
Right after the piercing, the 6-month-old can be seen sporting a ‘dirty look’, before the TikTok video transitions to another clip of her smiling at the camera afterward.
“Happy baby,” the mother said.
At the time of this writing, the TikTok video has gathered 42,000 likes and 388,000 views along with thousands of comments from viewers.
The majority of the commenters have heavily criticized the mom for inflicting ‘unnecessary pain on a baby’.
“That’s terrible,” one commenter said. “And the mom smiles. Ugh. Poor baby.”
“Don’t use a piercing gun, just hold your screaming infant down while a stranger shoved needles in her ears,” a sarcastic commenter wrote. “Got it!”
“This should be illegal,” a third one said. “It should be the baby’s choice when they can make one. Putting it through that pain with it wanting earrings is awful.”
Despite the criticisms, some others defended the woman’s actions.
“Y’all act like you’d even remember being pierced as a baby,” one commenter wrote. “Cause I don’t even remember.”
The mother then quoted the comment in a follow-up post by saying: “She literally had no idea what happened lol.”
Her comment is accompanied by a short video of her baby smiling away happily.
“Good morning! Good morning!” the mom can be heard in the clip. “Look at them beautiful ears. Look at them! Good morning.”
“How you feeling girl? How you feeling? How you feeling?”
The mother’s follow-up video post has ignited another debate in the comments section.
“It’s a traumatic experience that gets engraved in their brain and causes issues into adulthood whether they have the memory or not, their body remembers,” one person argued.
“Getting them done young is great in my opinion,” another one has said. “The pain vanishes so quick, parents can clean them much better, making sure they don’t get infected.”
“Cool thing about that is that they can’t say no to me getting more piercings, like mom you gave me my first two,” another commenter jokingly said.
