A 31-year-old mother forced her young daughter to stand for three days straight until she collapsed from exhaustion.
Majelic ‘Jellie’ Young, 4, was last seen alive last year but her remains were only discovered in May this year on her mother’s property.
Malikah Diane Bennett has been arrested and charged with felony child abuse, first-degree murder, felony concealing a death, and inflicting physical injury.
Court records alleged that the young girl collapsed and hit her head after being forced to stand for three days straight.
Her mother then stuffed her body in trash bags and kept it in her SUV for five days until the smell became strong and unbearable.
Bennett then buried the remains in the ground. Police looking for the girl found the body in Bennett’s backyard.
According to arrest warrants mentioned by WSOC, police responded to Bennett’s home where she lived with at least 8 children for a welfare check after a child protective services case worker contacted 911, asking officers to look for Majelic.
A man questioned by detectives said that Bennett told him that the girl was dead but she didn’t report her death because of the injuries she had on her body.
The warrant alleged that Majelic’s older sister revealed that the 4-year-old was being punished by their mother and was forced to stand without being allowed to sit.
She also told police that Bennett bought a shovel, dug a hole in the backyard, and covered her sister’s body with dirt.
Days after Bennett’s arrest, police charged the child’s grandmother, 33-year-old Tammy Moffett, with concealing a death.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Lieutenant Bryan Crum said during a press conference: “I’ve worked homicide most of the last 10 years and I can tell you this case is deeply disturbing.”
