Rope jumping or rope free-flying is an extreme sport that originated in the United States in the 1990s.
It is similar to bungee jumping, but the rope is made of nylon so jumpers don’t bounce.
The extreme sport is practiced on high buildings and cliffs. It has been described as a cross between bungee jumping and abseiling, with dizzying rope swings.
While performing such a sport gives jumpers an incomparable thrill, it also comes with great risks.
In Kazakhstan, a mom-of-three tragically died after the support rope from the 82ft extreme jump sport failed to hold her.
In a recorded footage, Yevgenia Leontyeva, 33, was seen calmly stepping over the edge of the hotel rooftop in the city of Karaganda.
Bystanders can be heard screaming in fear as the shocking video captured the moment of Yevgenia’s horrific fall, which left her suffering multiple injuries.
Local reports claim that the support rope was not secured.
Yevgenia, who is an experienced jumper, was immediately taken to a hospital where she underwent surgery for serious head injuries. But unfortunately, the 33-year-old mother died shortly afterward.
“The patient was operated on,” a local health spokesman said in a statement. “A craniotomy was performed and the removal of the hematoma.”
“Despite the ongoing medical measures, the patient died.”
A female friend, who was also due to leap, can be heard shouting as Yevgenia’s jump goes wrong.
The cross-line was supposed to break her fall and leave her suspended, but reports claim that it was either not secured or simply failed to hold.
Yevgenia was sent crashing onto the ground before being dragged around 12ft. She was also sent crashing into a nearby wall.
The witnesses said that the jump went ahead before the personnel had time to secure the line on a tree.
Before the tragic jump, Yevgenia and her friend had posted “Live it up” and “We’re going to fly” on their social media accounts.
Meanwhile, a criminal investigation was launched amid suspicion of “negligence” by jump organizers.
If proven guilty, the maximum potential punishment is a 40-day jail sentence.
Yevgenia left three boys behind, all of them are under 14, two of her own, and the son of a relative who had died.
