The devastated mother of Christmas Parade killer Darrell Brooks is ‘blaming herself’ for posting his $1,000 bail only days before he plowed his red Ford SUV into the crowd in Wisconsin.
His ex-girlfriend told the New York Post that the convicted felon’s mother, Dawn Woods, regrets taking him out of prison after he got arrested for attacking and running over a woman.
Speaking to The Post, the ex-girlfriend said of Brooks’ mother: “She’s wrecked that people were killed as a result and she’s like, ‘I’m blaming myself, because had I not bailed him out, this wouldn’t have happened.’”
The ex-girlfriend, who shares a son with Brooks, said that her child hasn’t interacted with him since he was a baby.
“He disappeared when my son was almost 3 months old,” she recalled. “I’ve done all of this on my own, raising my child by myself.”
Brooks was charged with five counts of first-degree intentional homicide, which carries a life sentence. His bond was set at $5 million.
Waukesha County District Attorney Susan Opper said that additional charges related to the sixth fatality and 62 injured will come later this or next week.
Brooks’ ex-girlfriend told The Post: “When I saw his picture online, I was like, ‘What the f***?’ I was embarrassed enough to have him as the father of my child beforehand, because he wasn’t taking care of him.
“What do you think I am now? Mortified.”
She continued: “I wish I could replace him as the person I had a son with, but I can’t. I am sickened by it, obviously devastated, can’t sleep.
“I’ve been donating and saying prayers and doing everything that I can.”
The ex-girlfriend added: “What’s hurting me more is he shares DNA with my child.”
Despite losing communication with Brooks, she said that she has remained in touch with his mother, who “has never condoned any of his bad behavior.”
“She’s always condemned everything that he’s done … even weed possession, she’s never condoned,” the ex said.
“She’s always been very resolute on, ‘You need to do better. You need to do right. This is not how I raised you.’”
