In Australia, a mother poured bleach into her premature baby’s feeding tube so she could rest and get a good night’s sleep, the court heard.
Brooke Evelyn Lucas, 26 at the time, from Perth, said she was so desperate to rest that she felt “relaxed and relieved” when the poison took hold of her baby son in December 2018.
William, Brooke’s son, was born 14 weeks premature. He suffers from Pierre Robin sequence which requires continuous care and breathing and eating through a tube, The Sun reported.
Back on December 24, 2018, the boy was released from the hospital to the care of Brooke, who called him a “Christmas miracle” at the time.
However, on October 20, 2021, the Supreme Court heard that just five days later after the boy was discharged, Brooke allegedly attempted to poison him in a desperate attempt to settle him down.
According to the police, Brooke described how her son had been lying in his crib crying in their home when she went out to a nearby laundry to get a bottle of bleach.
Brooke then poured the bleach into her baby’s formula, drip-feeding the poison directly into his stomach, the Supreme court heard.
Prosecutors said that the distraught mother then sat and watched her 13-month-old premature baby vomit and have seizures until she eventually called emergency services, 7news reported.
Moreover, Brooke initially claimed that the horrendous act was committed by the young boy’s older sister.
Baby William was then rushed to Perth Children’s Hospital and continued to vomit for about 10 to 12 times more in the ambulance alone as he fought for his life.
Miraculously, the brave baby survived the poison inflicted by his own mother and spent 17 weeks in the hospital before he was discharged.
The young boy was now in the care of his grandparents.
As for Brooke, she handed herself to the police two weeks later. After being consumed with guilt, she admitted to the authorities that she poisoned her son.
After a thorough investigation, Brooke came to court expecting a lesser sentence after pleading guilty to putting her son’s life in danger.
However, upon hearing Brooke’s plea, the hearing has been postponed as the judge is reportedly reconsidering his verdict.
The now 29-year-old mother is expected to be sentenced on Friday.
