A mother who killed her 19-month-old baby girl with boiling water said that ‘she’d never got a break at all’.
Katie Crowder said her daughter had been ‘draining her life’ and that the toddler had to go to nursery the year before the murder occurred.
Lorraine Orton of Nottinghamshire County Council’s family services recalled the conversation and told the inquest that Crowder had never spoken to her before like that about her baby.
“Katie told me that Gracie was the one thing that was keeping her going,” Orton said, according to Nottinghamshire Live.
Crowder’s mother, Karen Crowder, said during the hearing: “I know Kate said it, but I’ll say it as well, she could be draining at times.”
Listening to the hearing, Crowder said it was agreed with the family services that “if I was having a bad day,” little Gracie went to her mother’s.
Crowder, who had struggled with her mental health problems for many years, was reportedly involved with Change Grow Live (CGL) – a drugs support charity – after she was rushed to a hospital due to an overdose in 2019.
On August 14, 2019, she met with a CGL worker, Marian, who had agreed to work with her.
On August 23, Ms. Orton and Crowder had talked about the mother’s appointment with Millfield Services (mental health services at King’s Mill Hospital) because she said ‘it felt so far away.’
By August 24, there was a conversation about Gracie ‘draining her life’ and she needed to bring her into nursery.
Gracie tragically died on March 6, 2020, and the cause of death was ‘scalds’ after she suffered severe burn injuries.
The judge who sentenced Crowder told her: “I am satisfied that, for whatever reason, instead of seeking prompt medical attention for Gracie, which may well have saved her life, you did not seek assistance from your parents, who lived a few doors away, until after you knew Gracie had died.”
She is now serving a life sentence for the murder of her daughter.
