A 29-year-old man has shared how an accident left him needing to have his private parts amputated.
Paul Berry from Saint Louis, Missouri, was driving after having a few drinks when he lost control of his vehicle in 2014. His car rolled over, breaking his hips, pelvis, neck, nose, and jaw.
The accident also left him with a brain injury. His pen*s and one of his testicles were severely injured and had to be cut off.
7 years later, Paul said that he finally has the courage to talk about the incident.
“They had to amputate my, well, manhood,” he expressed. “It’s like they chopped a tree down and there’s a stump.
“Ironic, because I didn’t feel like a ‘man’ until after the accident.”
Paul continued: “I want to tell the world about the emotional toll this took and will always take on me.
“It has forever changed my life in a way that I wouldn’t wish upon my worst enemy.”
Paul said that he was driving to see his then-girlfriend at about 2 am on May 10, 2014. He admitted that he had a few drinks with his friend before the incident.
“I was over there every day, and drinking a fifth of hard liquor every day,” he explained.
But after driving over the Jefferson Barracks Bridge, Paul took the exit onto Route Three and lost control of his vehicle.
“I either fell asleep or I slipped in the rain,” he said. “I started to go one way and I turned the wheel the other way trying to correct myself but I overcorrected which caused the vehicle to flip.
“It rolled a few times and I was ejected out the back window, and then I went flying and the car kept rolling and I hit the ground and the car happened to stop rolling right on top of me.”
Paul broke his hips, ribs, pelvis, nose, neck, and sustained a brain injury. He did not wake up from his coma for more than a month, during which time he had 13 screws in his chin and plates put on his face and a titanium jaw fitted.
“You couldn’t tell by looking at me though, they did a damn good job!” he added.
“I have always dreamt of having a baby girl – my whole life, basically,” Paul expressed.
“I guess I should have felt lucky to be alive considering, but honestly at that point in my life I didn’t feel very lucky.”
