Police have released a photo of the man who shot a heavily pregnant woman in front of her two children.
40-year-old Justin Soriano fired the shot that took the life of 31-year-old Shanice Young at her apartment building in Harlem at 1:16 am on Sunday, according to the New York Police Department.
Young was trying to separate a fight between her boyfriend and her ex – believed to be Soriano – when she was shot in the head.
According to reports, Young was carrying gifts from her baby shower into the apartment when the fight started.
Jose Morales, the building’s superintendent, told the Daily News: “(The gunman) came in chasing the boyfriend. They ran through here and out the other side and they ran downstairs.”
Young’s devastated family told PIX 11 that her ex-boyfriend had been stalking her, waiting in front of her flat.
Her father, 57-year-old Thurman Young, told the News: “I helped her put her gifts in the car and I said, ‘I’ll see you tomorrow.’
“She was going to have her baby in five days. She said ‘This baby is coming in five days, Daddy, get ready. I said ‘I’ll be ready.’”
Police arrived at the scene and found Young unresponsive. She was taken to Harlem Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Young’s family told ABC 7 that her children, aged 6 and 15, witnessed the incident and watched on as their mom was loaded into the ambulance.
“This right here was a senseless shooting,” Harlem Hospital chaplain Robert Rice told PIX. “I’m very upset and I’m angry. I shouldn’t be angry as a clergy, but this one here has touched my heart.”
