A woman has tied the knot with the man who was found guilty of killing her half-brother after she wrote a letter to him in which she offered forgiveness.
Crystal Straus married John Tiedjen, who has been in prison for 32 years, after he was released on bond.
Tiedjen was sentenced to prison after he was found guilty of murdering Brian McGary in 1989.
According to reports, McGary is also Tiedjen’s half-brother and they had grown up together. They were roommates at the time of the fatal stabbing and shooting after they spent a night smoking weed and drinking heavily.
Tiedjen was 25 when McGary was found lifeless in the room they shared. He then went on to serve 32 years in prison for the murder.
But he always claimed his innocence by saying McGary had taken his own life.
In an intensive interrogation by detectives, Tiedjen confessed to murdering McGary in an act of self-defense but insisted he can’t remember anything.
Straus and Tiedjen’s romance started with a letter she wrote to him saying she forgave him.
In an interview with News 5 Cleveland, Tiedjen said: “With all my heart I love her. There is nobody else I think about, and I want to be with her my whole life. And I wrote her a letter back and I said, ‘I didn’t do it, take a look at this stuff.”
Straus also said: “I love him, obviously. If I didn’t love him, I would not be sitting here with him.”
Tiedjen proposed to Straus on the phone on New Year’s 2020, the Washington Reported.
“It’s definitely not a fairy tale,” said Tiedjen’s attorney, Kendall Corral. “But it’s so genuine.”
