A 73-year-old man from Alabama died of heart failure after being rejected by 43 hospitals across three states that were filled with COVID patients.
But when Ray DeMonia was finally admitted to a hospital in Mississippi, it was already too late. His condition worsened and he passed away on September 1.
According to reports, he had suffered a heart incident only days before his birthday.
DeMonia’s grieving family said that staff at their local hospital had contacted more than 40 hospitals across three states asking for a free bed before they were finally accepted in Rush Foundation Hospital.
He passed away shortly after arriving at the Mississippi hospital.
“Ray DeMonia was like no other. Ray, a native of Cullman, Alabama was well known for DeMonia’s Antiques and Auctions where he spent 40 years in the antique business and traveled the country gathering antiques and sharing his wealth of knowledge,” his obituary read.
“He served as auctioneer annually for the Cullman Rotary Club fundraiser auction as well as the Annual Draw Down Auction for the Hospice of Cullman County, Inc. for over 20 years,” it continued.
“In honor of Ray, please get vaccinated if you have not, in an effort to free up resources for non-COVID-related emergencies.
“Due to COVID 19, CRMC emergency staff contacted 43 hospitals in 3 states in search of a Cardiac ICU bed and finally located one in Meridian, MS. He would not want any other family to go through what his did.”
DeMonia’s death came after the US reported 180,000 new coronavirus cases.
According to the Alabama Health Department, more than half of those eligible to get the vaccine have received at least one jab.
