Five people were killed after a man armed with a bow and arrow began marauding through a town and shooting at strangers.
The tragic incident that shocked the nation took place in Kongsberg, Norway, where a man allegedly known to have mental health issues began shooting arrows at random people on Wednesday evening.
According to the local reports, five people were killed and two severely injured after the suspect started firing arrows at people at a local supermarket.
After leaving the supermarket, the man patrolled through the small town and continued his attack until his arrest some thirty minutes later.
“We can unfortunately confirm that there are several injured and also unfortunately several killed in this episode. The man who committed this act has been arrested by the police and, according to our information, there is only one person involved,” the police confirmed in a press conference.
The two people who were injured during the massacre suffered severe injuries and were rushed to the hospital. They are currently in a stable, non-life-threatening condition.
As of this writing, the incident is still under investigation, whereas the authorities have yet to determine what the motive for the attack was.
Recalling the terrifying scene, one witness said: “I was sitting and watching Squid Game when I suddenly saw and heard sirens. I thought it was in the TV series. Suddenly I heard the police screaming like hell: ‘Put down your weapon.’”
As AFP reported, another witness told TV2 that she saw a “man standing on the corner with arrows in a quiver on his shoulder and a bow in his hand” as she was walking through the town on Wednesday evening.
“Afterwards, I saw people running for their lives. One of them was a woman holding a child by the hand,” she recalled.
Following the shocking attack, Mayor Kari Anne Sand said:
“It is a tragedy for all those affected. I have no words. This is a shocking event that we did not think could happen in Norway.”
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store extended his “thoughts and deepest sympathy” to all those affected by the attack.
“What we have heard from Kongsberg tonight testifies that a cruel and brutal act has been committed. We still know little about what happened and what is behind it, but we know that several innocent people were killed and that several were injured,” he said.
“My thoughts and deepest sympathy are with those affected, their families, and with the police, the health workers who are now working full time to assist those who need help.”
