A 45-year-old man who had been declared dead after a road accident was found alive in a morgue freezer by his shocked family members.
Srikesh Kumar was rushed to a private medical facility after being hit by a motorcycle in India. But the doctor declared him dead on arrival.
According to reports, he was then transferred to a government hospital for a post-mortem.
Kumar’s body was put in a morgue freezer until his grieving family members arrived the next day.
“The emergency medical officer had seen the patient at 3 am and there was no heartbeat,” said Chief medical superintendent of Moradabad Dr. Shiv Singh.
“He had examined the man multiple times.”
The medical superintendent also said: “When a police team and his family came over to initiate the paperwork for the autopsy, he was found alive.”
A document was reportedly signed by Kumar’s family agreeing to an autopsy, according to The times of India.
However, his sister-in-law Madhu Bala noticed that he managed to move.
“He’s not at all dead. How did this happen? Look, he wants to say something, he is breathing,” Ms. Bala said in a video.
Dr. Singh said that the case was called one of the ‘rarest’ and that ‘we cannot call it negligence.’
He explained that Kumar was declared dead at the time but his family and a police team found him alive six hours later.
Dr. Singh said that an investigation has been conducted to determine how the man was mistakenly declared dead.
Kumar is still in a coma and is receiving treatment at a medical center in Meerut.
