A husband who used a viper and a cobra to take the life of his wife has received a double life sentence in the ‘rarest of the rare cases’.
Sooraj Kumar reportedly threw a highly venomous Russell’s viper snake at his wife Uthra. The incident left the 25-year-old in a hospital for almost two months.
But while the wife recovered at her parent’s home, Kumar then used a cobra and threw it at her while she was asleep.
The bite of the poisonous reptile took Uthra’s life.
Kumar was arrested in 2020 and pleaded not guilty but police said his phone records revealed that he contacted snake handlers and had watched videos about snakes before taking the life of his wife.
It is believed to be India’s first time a person has been convicted of murder by using a snake as a weapon.
“The mode of execution and the diabolic plan of the accused to murder Uthra, his wife who was bedridden, makes it (the case) fall into the category of rarest of rare,” the public prosecutor said.
According to the Hindustan Times newspaper, snake handler Vava Suresh said it was possible that Kumar had “inflicted pain on the reptile to provoke it to bite.”
Kumar was from a not well-off family while Uthra came from an affluent family. Their marriage involved a dowry including 500,000 rupees ($6,644) and a car.
Uthra’s parents became suspicious after the husband tried to take control of her property as soon as she passed away.
Kumar’s family was charged with conspiracy after some of the victim’s gold was discovered buried near his home days after Uthra died.
