In life, we come across a number of inspiring hiking stories that allow us to believe in humanity, all over again.
Likewise, this story is sure to melt your heart. It showcases how a simple injury can change your perspective, in more ways than one.
In short, it’s a miraculous and heroic display of great humanity as strangers rescue a female hiker.
The 56-year-old, ambitious woman went hiking when she suddenly faced the most unfortunate of events. While the hike up was a normal affair, things didn’t go as smoothly for the 56-year-old, when she made her journey down the terrain.
Most importantly, the support, love, and care she received from strangers nearby won her belief in humanity, all over again. And below, we’re revealing all the details in one of the greatest hiking stories just for you.
In one of the most shocking hiking stories, an injured female is carried on strangers’ backs
It was around August 2018, and that’s when 56-year-old Bev Wedelstedt made her away towards one of the most shocking hiking stories of a lifetime. Moreover, little did the fierce hiker know what was in store for her.
Unfortunately, Wedelstedt faced a serious injury while hopping down the peak, as she was on her way back down the rugged trail, alongside three close friends. The hiker collapsed and fell on her knee, rupturing the front cruciate ligament as well as meniscus of her left-sided knee.
She described her injury with the following words:
‘I heard that snap, and I mean it’s a snap you’ll never forget. I just went down, I collapsed.’
Wedelstedt took a moment to soak her trauma in, thinking of ways of how she’d go downhill with such a painful injury. Fortunately, she was lucky enough that a doctor was present on site.
And that’s when out of nowhere, a bunch of strangers started hovering around her, leaving the 56-year-old bedazzled at their great humanity. Further, the hiker recalls the incident as a group of generous men who first donated material for her knee splint. And if that wasn’t enough, they each offered to carry her down, in rounds.
How the generosity of 9 unknown men led to one woman’s restored faith in humanity
Wedelstedt describes her feelings as follows:
‘I’m just sitting there, and I’m freaking out because I’m sitting there thinking ‘How am I supposed to be getting down?’ she exclaimed.
But to her great surprise, she and her girlfriends were startled by the great generosity offered by 9 unknown strangers.
One of Wedelstedt’s friends, Donald Adetoy said:
‘People are amazing, people are absolutely amazing!’
‘Sure enough, he grabbed her, put her on his back and he started walking down and I said ‘Man, that actually seems like its not too bad.’
The way 9 unknown people came together, taking turns to ensure Wedelstedt came down safely while riding on their backs. Above all, the journey downhill wasn’t an easy one. It’s around 2.5 miles worth of hardcore trekking.
Colorado’s famous Grays Peak and it’s unforgiving terrain
Colorado is a famous destination for hikers, thanks to its serene and natural beauty. Above all, one mountain stands far above all others. And in case you haven’t guessed it, it’s the renowned Grays Peak.
The giant mountain is a hikers’ hotspot with people coming in from all over, to take part in memorable hiking stories and general sightseeing adventures. However, the great tourist attraction is more than meets the eye.
You’ll find a peak that goes as high as 14,278 feet, above the sea level. Similarly, the incredible height prevents any trees from growing from the top. You’re likely to find all types of rocks, shrubs as well as boulders here, making the site an exciting exploration for many.
Also, this peak’s terrain is very unforgiving. And we can’t explain how devastating a fall from such a drastic height could be.
Injured hiker terms her journey as one of the most memorable hiking stories
Never once did any of the men let the injured 56-year-old feel like she was a burden on their shoulders. It was almost as if they knew it was their duty to help. Hence they couldn’t help holding themselves back.
One helper “was so close to the ledge I could see rocks tumbling down from where he stepped on them,” Wedelstedt remembers.
Today, Wedelstedt is doing well after her knee surgery. At the same time, she remembers the incident as one of the most memorable hiking stories ever. She recalls the lighthearted moments of the incident where she laughed off all her worries saying:
“I wanted to meet a lot of guys, but this isn’t the way I wanted to do it.”
Furthermore, she will never forget the moment so many strangers bonded together for one cause, and that cause was to help her during her distressing time of need.
And if hiking stories like these don’t restore your faith in humanity, then we’re not quite sure what will!
