A 26-year-old nurse was diagnosed with aggressive cancer after her doctor dismissed a lump discovered in her breast as ‘nothing’.
Sophie Jackson, an NHS oncology nurse, said she went to her GP as soon as she noticed a lump in her right breast last year.
But her doctor told her that it was probably due to her menstrual cycle and that to wait for a few weeks if there are any changes.
But Jackson was not convinced and decided to see a specialist at Poole Hospital where she was given the devastating news.
In the past ten months, the nurse has endured 10 rounds of radiotherapy and six cycles of chemotherapy. She also underwent surgery to remove the mass.
Now that she is free from cancer, she has returned to work at University Hospitals Dorset.
Jackson revealed that she was told the tumor is likely to return as she had an aggressive form of invasive ductal carcinoma. She is currently taking regular injections to reduce the estrogen levels in her body and prevent cancer from returning.
Now, she wants to spread the message for women to check their breasts.
“I cried my eyes out and first asked if I was going to die and second if I was going to lose all my hair,” she shared.
“Other than the lump I had no other symptoms whatsoever. It felt completely random and the diagnosis was such a shock.”
She also said that if she had left it for weeks like her doctor suggested, it may have already spread.
Jackson added: “I’d just love to spread awareness that cancer can affect you at a young age even with no family history, no genetics, no risk factors other than taking the contraceptive pill.
“Early detection has saved my life so it’s so important to check monthly and push to get things checked out. You are never wasting anyone’s time.”
