A man who thought he only had a ‘man flu’ lost all of his limbs and some parts of his face after nearly dying from Strep A.
Alex Lewis experienced pain for ten days until his health quickly deteriorated. When he woke up, the pain was so severe and his skin had started to become purple.
He was rushed to the hospital but within hours, his organs stopped functioning properly.
Alex later found out that he had caught Strep A and was given only a 3 percent chance of survival.
The infection, which for most people is a little more severe than a sore throat, resulted in toxic shock syndrome and septicemia.
The 42-year-old underwent numerous surgeries and had all of his limbs amputated as doctors fought for his life.
After the infection ravaged his mouth and face, he also had to undergo facial reconstruction.
Years later, Alex is seeing news about children dying of the same infection that almost took his life.
“I saw an interview with the father of a little girl in Alder Hey hospital and that was pretty raw. I can only imagine what he’s going through and I know my family went through similar. It’s tough,” he expressed.
“It’s great that the media is raising awareness. I think it’s important parents don’t panic as it is cold and flu season, but with low baseline immunity after two years of not mixing, things are spreading in schools and it’s quite a worrying time.”
Alex also encouraged others to ask for help and advice if there are any symptoms as “it’s better to be safe than sorry.”
“I’m very lucky to be here,” Alex said. “Don’t be afraid to push to have your child seen.”
This comes after an eight child in the UK tragically died after contracting Strep A.
