A 20-year-old man who planned to die by assisted suicide after his intestine burst held a farewell barbecue party.
Eric Coulan from British Columbia held his goodbye party last month and will now end his life on his own terms because of a burst intestine that destroyed his health.
The former mechanic, who has to carry a colostomy bag around at all times, will use Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) law to die painlessly by taking drugs administered by a nurse or doctor.
Speaking to CJDC, he said: “There’ll be an end to suffering. I suffer all day long. I’ve been in a four walled room for a very long time and I’ve just had enough.”
Coulan spent most of his childhood taking medication for abdominal pain. Despite going to different hospitals in Canada, doctors were unable to diagnose him.
Two years ago, he underwent an emergency surgery to have part of his lower intestine removed as it ruptured and sent him into septic shock and a coma.
“I went in to emergency and got a bed right away and that night (it) ruptured and (I) got put in a coma for I can’t remember how long,” Coulan recalled, adding that doctors haven’t been able to give him a prognosis for long he might survive his current condition.
He was told that the only way for a possible recovery was to undergo six organ transplants, which doctors claimed had never been tried before.
Doctors also warned that there was only a 50 percent chance of recovery.
Coulan said that life is too painful to continue. He struggles to speak and has lost weight.
On May 22, he held a goodbye barbecue party but has yet to decided when he’ll end his life.
“I will go when I am ready. It is not when I am sick. It is not when they pull my medications. It is when I am ready,” he said.
