A grieving mother has shared how her son suddenly dropped dead at the age of 31 while he was working at his computer.
Valerie, 64, believes that her son Gary Anderson died so they could all live after they discovered that he had an undiagnosed heart condition that runs in the family.
Since Gary’s tragic death, his mother and youngest sister Jacqui, 29, were diagnosed with Brugada Syndrome.
Gary from Cramlington, Northumberland, was working for Sky in Newcastle when his roommates found him slumped over his computer desk on June 13, 2020.
His friends quickly called paramedics but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Since his death, Valerie has joined forces with other grieving parents whose children have also died in the same way, with the help of charity Cardiac Arrest in the Young (CRY) – which supports young individuals diagnosed with heart problems.
The parents are now calling on the NHS and the government to introduce heart screenings for people at the age of 14.
Speaking about the night she found out that her son had passed away, Valerie said: “The shock and the horror together with the uncontrollable crying throughout that night and ever since then – it does not get any easier for anyone.
“It has been two years now, it just doesn’t seem real. I’ve had to lose Gary to find out I’ve got it [Brugada Syndrome]. I was really upset when I found out and I thought I’ve had to lose him in the process – I just hope something comes of this.”
Jacqui also said that her brother’s death could have been prevented if there was a national rollout of heart screening.
“Gary has managed to save all of our lives, we wouldn’t have known otherwise,” she added.
