A young girl was left fighting for her life after contracting the killer bug known as strep A.
4-year-old Camila Rose Burns was rushed to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, England, on Monday following a severe infection caused by A streptococci, bacteria that attack the sufferer’s skin and respiratory system.
As the child’s father, Dean Burns, explained, his daughter’s condition went from “a little under the weather” to requiring immediate medical attention and hospitalization.
“When we got here Monday, they said she’s the poorest girl in the whole of England… she’s basically not the same girl anymore. It’s heartbreaking,” the distressed dad said.
“She was restless. We shouted some nurses down, and we had to leave the room, they put her to sleep, and she’s been on a ventilator ever since, keeping her alive.
“It’s the worst thing that can ever happen to anybody.”
Mr. Burns went on to tell the Daily Mail that the girl’s family is now praying for a miracle because everyone loves her very much.
“The pain that she feels and that we all feel, you can’t even imagine it. It’s the worst pain in the world,” he added.
“I wake up every day now and it’s that dread, just knowing that she’s in there and that she’s suffering. We go into the hospital and we just say ‘come on, come on, we need you to live, you have to get better.’”
As Dean and his wife, Kaye, explained, they first took their daughter to the hospital last week after she presumably caught the bug at her school and started feeling chest pain.
At the time, however, her condition did not appear serious and she was sent back home only for the infection to worsen over the weekend and leave her in critical condition by Monday.
“I keep thinking why did they send her home, was that my fault? Would she be better now if I had kept her there?” Burns continued.
“These last couple of days we have just been so completely broken. My wife was holding it in but these last couple of days with all the news coming in about other children with Strep A has just made it all so difficult and so real.
“I owe those nurses and doctors everything, they saved her life but she is still clinging on for it.”
Dean also encouraged other parents not to hesitate to take their children to the doctor if they show symptoms of infection while pleading with people to pray for his young daughter.
