A 5-year-old girl was critically injured after getting shot by her younger cousin on Thanksgiving.
Little Khalis Eberhart was a smart and cheerful young girl from Georgia who suffered critical injuries after her 3-year-old cousin picked up his father’s loaded gun and shot her.
According to the reports, the incident took place on Thanksgiving, whereas Khalis was shot after her cousin picked up the loaded weapon that was resting unsupervised on top of a chair.
Following the shooting, the 5-year-old was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital in South Fulton where she was later pronounced dead.
Meanwhile, South Fulton Police Chief Keith Meadows spoke to 11Alive to confirm that the loaded firearm belonged to the 3-year-old’s father.
“Right now we’re in the holiday season, and our children are home from school. We understand everybody’s right to bear arms, but we would implore parents to be particularly aware of gun safety,” Meadows said.
“If you don’t have a lockbox, get a gun lock. If you don’t have a gun lock, then please consider unloading the weapon.”
As the young girl’s grandmother, Tracy Towns, has since the tragic incident revealed, Khalis was survived by two brothers of which one is her twin.
The heartbroken grandma also said her granddaughter was a “very smart girl” who always “kept a smile on her face.”
“I know it’s going to be difficult for them because twins do share a bond that people don’t understand. When you saw one, you saw the other one. They were always holding hands, hugging,” Towns told WSB-TV Atlanta.
Paying a tribute to the little angel was also Khalis’ aunt, Brittany, who insisted that the 5-year-old was “one of the sweetest kids in the family.”
“Ask anybody, my cousin Nathaniel is by far on of the BEST young fathers I know! On Thanksgiving night, his only daughter gained her wings! A single father of 3 children, who just loss their mom earlier this year!” Brittany wrote on Facebook.
“Now this… God… I don’t understand what’s happening right now and I know we aren’t supposed to question you but I really want some answers behind this one!
“Khalis was one of the sweetest kids we have in the family… My prayers and love are with you!”
Our thoughts are with Khalis’ family during these challenging times.
