A smart and cheerful young girl was killed in a senseless shooting after a gunman opened fire on her mother’s car.
Ta’Niyla Parker was an 11-year-old outgoing girl from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, who was shot dead after an unidentified shooter fired a barrage of bullets at her family’s vehicle when she was returning home from a birthday party.
During the shooting at Sherman Park neighborhood, which took place at around 9 pm on Saturday, Ta’Niyla was fatally shot and her little sister, 5-year-old Bra’Niyla, wounded.
After the shocking incident, grandmother Janice Little recalled how the girls’ mother, Talea Hairston, called her after her car was shot at by an unknown gunman.
“She called about 9 o’clock. I’m thinking she’s calling to say, ‘Come open up the door because I’m fixing to drop the kids off.’ But she just called and started hollering and screaming and said, ‘The babies were shot,’” the grieving grandma said.
Though little Bra’Niyla survived the shooting and is already doing better according to her grandmother, Ta’Niyla tragically succumbed to her gunshot wounds.
“She was very smart, outgoing. She was a loving big sister to her little sister,” Little added as she paid a tribute to her granddaughter.
Following the shooting, people have gathered on the streets of Milwaukee to protest the senseless killing and wield signs with messages such as ‘Stop killing our children.’
Meanwhile, Mayor Tom Barrett said the young girl’s death breaks his heart.
“As a dad it breaks my heart. As a mayor it makes me angry. I simply do not understand how an individual could fire a gun into a vehicle and kill a little girl,” he expressed.
“We do have to do everything we can to prevent retaliation, revenge. We know that that’s an issue that we’re facing in parts of the city right now where groups are trying to get back at each other and that’s a downward spiral. That’s only going to result in more deaths, more shootings, that’s not the answer.”
As of this writing, the motive for the shooting remains unclear, whereas the suspects have yet to be identified and arrested.
