An 18-year-old girl was reportedly strangled and buried by her own family after turning down their marriage arrangement.
According to the police, Saman Abbas, 18, went missing on May 1. She was last spotted in central Italy at a farm where her 46-year-old father, Shabbar, used to work.
As the authorities believe, Shabbar conspired with the teen girl’s mom, Nazia Shaheen, and the rest of the family to strangle the 18-year-old and bury her at the farm before escaping the country.
According to the investigators, the ‘honor killing’ likely followed after Saman turned down the forced marriage arrangement her family had planned.
While the teenager was set to marry one of her cousins in Pakistan, she was allegedly after a modern lifestyle and wanted to continue her relationship with her Italian boyfriend.
Since the girl’s disappearance, the police have launched a manhunt, whereas they managed to arrest 28-year-old Ijaz Ikram, one of the teen’s cousins, who presumably played a role in her death.
While the police are still on the hunt for 33-year-old cousin Nomanulhaq Nomanulahq and 47-year-old uncle Hasnain Danish, who is believed to have organized the murder, the girl’s parents were spotted in Pakistan. Both the 18-year-old’s mother and father have denied playing any part in their daughter’s disappearance.
As the Italian police believe, the feud between Saman and her family began last October when she fled her home following a dispute over the family’s marriage arrangement.
In April this year, the family presumably began preparing for the alleged murder, whereas Hasnain bought plane tickets for the girl’s parents.
On April 29, the uncle and Saman’s two cousins were caught on CCTV walking around the farm where her father used to work in the evening. They were reportedly carrying a blue bag, a bucket, and two shovels.
On the following day, Saman allegedly reached out to her Italian boyfriend and told him that she had overheard her uncle saying she had to be killed for dishonoring the family. After reporting the incident, the boyfriend was allegedly told to contact the police if he didn’t hear from his girlfriend in two days.
On May 1, Saman was spotted walking with her parents on the farm just around midnight. 13 minutes after leaving the view of the CCTV camera, the parents returned alone with the backpack that Shabbar had been wearing just minutes earlier.
As the police believe, the girl’s parents likely handed Saman over to her uncle and cousins with the intention of having her killed before fleeing the country.
