The first words of an 11-year-old sole survivor of a plane crash that killed everyone on board, including the pilot, have been revealed.
Her mother, Christie Perdue, revealed to Good Morning America her daughter’s first words after the horrific crash on Beaver Island.
She said that when she first heard of the accident, she did not know whether her daughter Laney had suffered severe injuries, burns, or whether she’d be able to walk again.
Christie recalled with a smile: “And she just said, ‘Hi mom,’ and so I just knew at that moment that that part was going to be OK.”
The mother said she believes her husband, who tragically died in the crash, saved Laney by wrapping her in his arms.
Laney told her mother that her last memory before the crash was of her father embracing her.
“Laney told me in the hospital that her last memory is that dad just grabbed her and held her really, really tight,” the mother of four shared.
“In my heart I know it protected her.”
Christie also revealed that her daughter suffered five broken bones and that all of the injuries were on one side of her body.
“I believe that would make sense to me that if her injuries were on one side, then her other side was with her dad and he was holding her,” she said in tears.
The fatal crash took the lives of four of the five people aboard the Island Airways flight that was approaching Welke Airport west of Mackinaw City. The victims have been identified as pilot William Julian and passengers Mike Perdue, Adam Kendall and Kate Leese.
Laney was airlifted to a hospital in Grand Rapids where she received treatment.
