While the world’s first trans olympian athlete may have made their debut at the Tokyo Games this year, the fact that she crashed out of the Olympics on a low note was truly something that many didn’t see coming.
Without a doubt, the 43-year-old weightlifter who hails from New Zealand made history by being the first-ever trans athlete to be considered for such a prestigious event. Despite major debates and controversies from critics all around, Laurel Hubbard beat the odds and was allowed to compete at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The star olympian was currently competing for the 87+kgs event, however, she failed on all three of their attempts. And that meant a disappointing defeat and a major crash out of the Olympics.
Hubbard appeared to be anxious after appearing slightly overbalanced with her moves during the 120kg category, which took place on Monday evening. Right after taking the bar upon her shoulders, it was evident that things were off to a rough start.
During the athlete’s second attempt of the 125kg category, judges ruled the move as invalid.
Next, it was time for the trans olympian’s third and final straw and as you can probably imagine, the pressure to perform was definitely on. However, even on that attempt, the 43-year-old failed to achieve anything, as it was more or less a repeat stunt of her first try.
The fact that the New Zealand olympian failed to pick up a single medal at the Tokyo Games was definitely a shocker for many, especially her team and fans who supported her, every single step of the way. Now, the trans star is at the center of much controversy with many questioning her poor performance and inclusion in the first place.
Moreover, some critics believe that Hubbard has gone about setting a very dangerous precedent that just might do plenty of damage to the world of women’s sports.
