In a shocking report, it was revealed how a desperate father had sold his young daughter to a much older man in order to get the money to feed his family.
As CNN discovered, an Afghan father named Abdul Malik agreed to sell his 9-year-old daughter, Parwana Malik, to a 55-year-old man named Qorban for approximately $2,000.
According to the father, who was seen handing over his young daughter in exchange for money, he was forced to go through with the heartbreaking deal in order to feed his family.
“This is your bride. Please take care of her. You are responsible now, please don’t beat her,” Malik allegedly told Qorban as the two met.
Following the ‘transaction’, the family insisted they are one of many households forced to sell their young daughters to older men in order to survive.
“My father has sold me because we don’t have bread, rice or flour. He has sold me to an old man,” the young girl told the reporters.
It was also revealed that Malik sold Parwana’s 12-year-old sister just months earlier after the family began struggling financially.
Following the two deals, the father insisted he had tried everything in his power to get bread on the table for his family to no avail. After failing to find work or borrow money from friends and relatives, and after begging for food didn’t pay off, Abdul agreed to sell two of his daughters so that others could live.
“We are eight family members. I have to sell to keep other family members alive,” he said as he admitted to feeling “broken” with guilt.
Meanwhile, CNN also spoke to Qorban, the 55-year-old man who bought Parwana.
“[Parwana] was cheap, and her father was very poor and he needs money. She will be working in my home. I won’t beat her. I will treat her like a family member. I will be kind,” the old man said.
As for the Malik family, the future remains uncertain with Abdul saying he might be forced to sell another daughter to buy food.
“The old man told me, ‘I’m paying for the girl. It’s none of your business what I’m doing with her, that’s my business,’” Abdul said.
He went on: “As I can see, we don’t have a future – our future is destroyed. I will have to sell another daughter if my financial situation doesn’t improve – probably the two-year-old.”
