A strict mother has sparked fury after revealing she made her young son sleep outside in the cold to teach him a lesson.
In a candid piece for DailyMail.com, Louise Parker opened up about her parenting methods and revealed she is a strict mom who prefers “tough love” rather than “coddling modern parenting” when it comes to raising her three kids aged 12, 13, and 15.
Recalling the time her actions got her in trouble with social services, the mother revealed that she punished her eldest son, who was 14 at the time, by making him sleep outside in the cold.
According to Louise, her son forgot to pack his sleeping bag when she took him to the scout camp to spend time in nature. After arriving at the camp, the boy quickly realized his mistake, but that didn’t stop his mother from choosing to “teach him a lesson” by making him sleep outside without the much-needed protection of his sleeping bag.
“Did I jump in the car and do the hour-long round trip to fetch it for him? No, I did not. I simply blew him a kiss and drove away. I was fully aware that he would spend the night shivering, with nothing but the tarpaulin of the tent shielding him from the elements. But I felt no guilt at all,” the woman wrote.
“Michael was old enough to take full responsibility for packing his own camping gear. When I arrived home, I even texted him a picture of it, with the message: ‘Your sleeping bag looks nice and cozy in the hallway.’”
The mother went on to admit that she “didn’t lose any sleep” that night even though she knew that her son was “going to suffer” outside in the cold.
“I’m a firm believer in tough love when it comes to raising my three children. I’ve never mollycoddled them, because I believe passionately in letting them learn life lessons the hard way,” she added.
While Louise remains convinced she is in the right when it comes to her parenting techniques, most parents don’t seem to agree with her.
After her actions at the scout camp, the mom-of-three was reported to social services who sent workers to their home for inspection.
“Of course I was terrified in case, in some horrendous twist, they decided I was an unfit mother and took my children into care. Fortunately, it soon became clear that the social workers thought the whole situation was ludicrous. We never heard from them again,” Louise explained.
Speaking to the publication was also Louise’s eldest son, Michael, who recalled the scout camp experience saying:
“Mum’s the only parent I know who would have left her kid without a sleeping bag in freezing temperatures. My friends kept asking when she would be coming back with it and I said: ‘Believe me, she won’t.’
“They joked about how cruel she was to leave me shivering all night. Although I was too cold to find it funny at the time, I can laugh about it now – and Mum was right, I’ve never forgotten an important piece of equipment since. Friends all know that my mum is way stricter than any of theirs.”
