A woman has recalled the devastating time she discovered her biological parents were in fact siblings.
64-year-old Teresa Weiler is a British lady who joined BBC Radio 4’s Life Changing channel program to open up about her life story and her shocking discovery.
As Teresa revealed, she was adopted into a “lovely family” in Middlesex, London, when she was just a toddler. She had a wonderful childhood and knew nothing about her real origins until she turned 18 and was told by her father that she was adopted.
“When I reached eighteen, my father sat me down and told me that they were not my real parents. I couldn’t believe it at first,” Weiler recalled.
“But then they showed me my birth certificate, and it had only one name, my biological mother’s. Of course, it belonged to a woman I never saw or met.”
Teresa went on to explain she immediately knew something was off because her biological father’s name wasn’t mentioned on her birth certificate.
After doing a little digging of her own in her mid-twenties, Teresa found out her mother had given birth to her when she was just sixteen years old. Even more shocking was the fact that her biological father, Sean, was her mother’s brother.
“The first thing that happens is the shock and the revulsion and the shame because I’d grown up in a strict Catholic family where sex before marriage was even a no-no,” Weiler added.
“So, for me, this was off the scale.”
While she couldn’t bring herself to believe the shocking discovery at first, Teresa eventually came to terms with the fact that her biological family likely abandoned her because of the circumstances leading to her birth.
“So this explains why no-one will come back for me, this explains why no-one wants me,” Teresa expressed.
“I didn’t think my family would still want me, I thought they would turn their back on me if they knew the truth, and I couldn’t face the shame of telling friends or other people the truth.”
She also claimed her discovery explains why she has been suffering from a variety of health issues from an early age.
As a result of the truth that surfaced when she was still in her 20s, Weiler decided never to have children of her own to avoid the risk of passing on her “physical and mental vulnerabilities” to her kids.
“That was huge, because I dearly, dearly wanted children, that was one of my greatest wishes. But I simply didn’t feel that I could bring a child into the world knowing that just one generation previously, that had been the history,” she concluded.
