A 29-year-old woman from Texas lost both her hands and feet after she gave birth to her daughter.
Krystina Pacheco from Pleasanton gave birth to her baby Amelia via c-section but only days after going back home, she started to feel unwell.
She also experienced difficulty breathing and thought that the symptoms were related to recovery so she simply took ibuprofen.
But when the feeling of being sick didn’t go away, Pacheco visited a doctor and that’s when she was sent to the emergency room.
The mother was then airlifted to a hospital in San Antonio where she was diagnosed with septic shock – a life-threatening condition that occurs when blood pressure drops to a dangerously low level after an infection.
She told ABC News: “I just remember I couldn’t breathe anymore and I couldn’t see anymore and I just started slowly fading out.”
“My husband, I could just hear him saying, ‘Please come back to us, please, your babies need you. I need you. I need you to be here and help me with our babies,’ and that’s the last thing I remember,” she added, according to PEOPLE.
Pacheco was given life-saving treatments to stop and prevent the infection but it cut off blood circulation to her feet and hands.
“My hands and feet were black. They looked like a person who had gotten frostbite,” the new mom said, adding that doctors and nurses had done their best to avoid the situation.
“It was just breaking down and being absolutely crushed,” Pacheco said of the amputations.
“And crying with my family, crying with Jacob, and just being sad that my life would no longer be the same.”
Despite what happened, the 29-year-old saw her husband, son, and baby girl as her strength to get through the surgeries.
