A mother has shared how she was left horrified after her nipple ‘broke off’ while breastfeeding her son.
Brooke, who goes under the username @brookesobasic on TikTok, explained that her nipple had started to turn black because of poor blood circulation but she continued to breastfeed her son.
However, she was baffled when her baby suddenly stopped feeding and seemed to be ‘choking.’ When she looked down to check, she was shocked to discover that her nipple had disappeared and she found it inside her son’s mouth.
“Here I am, just gave birth, and trying to get my baby to latch. I feel like he has a good latch, I felt really positive, he was gaining weight. Until I notice the latch was not so good,” Brooke said.
The mother said that her nipple turned black at the base and white at the tip due to poor blood flow.
“There’s no blood flow getting to the nipple,” she continued. “that’s a dead nipple and dead tissue.”
But the mother said that she still latched her son on and he was nursing when he suddenly stopped.
“I look down, and he’s kind of choking. My nipple broke off and he had it in his mouth.”
Brooke said that the incident made her ‘panic’ but she managed to get the nipple out of her baby’s mouth and used a plaster to reattach it to her breast.
She then called a nurse who advised her to keep the plaster on as the nipple can reattach if there is enough blood flow left.
Fortunately for the mom, it did.
“I rinsed the nipple off in water and I put it back on, and I called the advice nurse. They told me that if the nipple is still alive and has enough blood flow in it, it can actually stay alive, so I should keep the band-aid on.
“That’s what I did. My nipple’s not perfect today, but it’s still here!”
Brooke admitted that the experience turned her away from breastfeeding. “I will never breastfeed again,” she added.
