A mother who was told her baby had died in her womb is now celebrating the birth of her Christmas miracle.
27-year-old Hannah Cole was rushed to the Bradford Royal Infirmary after her water broke at only 20 weeks.
But the next day, she was told by doctors that her baby had died in the womb and booked her in for induced labor. But her ‘gut instinct’ told her that her son was still alive so she asked for one more scan, and that’s when doctors detected a heartbeat.
Oakley Cole-Fowler was at 24 weeks weighing 780 grams. Doctors and hospital bosses have since apologized to the family for the ‘distress and anxiety’ they caused.
“It’s been stressful and up and down,” Hannah said. “He was in ICU. He has been absolutely brilliant. I’m just relieved. It’s been a rollercoaster. He is my Christmas miracle.”
Little Oakley was only eight days old when he underwent surgery after being diagnosed with Necrotizing enterocolitis, where tissues in the intestine become inflame and die.
He faces more operations next spring.
“Hopefully, we will be able to bring him home in a couple of months,” Hannah said. “I feel a bit lost at the moment because he is not at home.”
Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust confirmed that the investigation of events around Hannah’s scans has concluded.
“We have concluded our investigation which is now being shared with Ms Cole,” a spokesperson said.
“We would like to send our congratulations to her and her family on the birth of Oakley and wish the family well during his long neo-natal journey.”
