A 22-month-old girl died in her sleep only hours after being sent home by a hospital where her parents were told to give her paracetamol in the form of Calpol.
It was on December 18 when Hailey Thompson was diagnosed with a virus at Wigan Infirmary.
However, she was sent home and her parents, Iboyla Adam, 35, and Kris Thompson, 32, were told to give her Calpol and fluids.
But the next day, Hailey’s parents found her unresponsive in her bedroom.
Mr. Thompson tried to resuscitate her by performing CPR before emergency services arrive and she was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Her grieving parents have now complained that the doctors at Wigan Infirmary did not take their daughter’s case seriously.
“We can’t believe we have lost our little girl. It all happened so quickly. Something in her body took control of her,” Mr. Thompson said.
“We want answers. How can a healthy baby die in her sleep? And why wasn’t she tested for Strep A, scarlet fever or Covid for instance?”
Hailey first went to a doctor on December 7 after developing runny nose and a cough. Doctors prescribed antibiotics which were stopped after she had allergic reaction.
A week later, she was taken back to the hospital where the parents were told that the toddler needed Calpol because it was a viral infection.
The next day, Mr. Thompson found Hailey panting and quickly called paramedics. He was told there would be a two-hour wait so they rushed her to A&E but Wigan Infirmary was experiencing one of its busiest days.
A doctor then told the parents to go home and give her fluids and Calpol.
But only hours later, she was found dead in her bed.
A spokesperson for Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust said: “Our sincere condolences go out to Hailey’s family at this tragic time. We are aware of the family’s concerns and are awaiting further information to understand more.”
