It is important for couples to support each other through ups and downs, and the need to stay with your partner becomes more important when they are grieving a family member.
One woman has come under fire after she took to the internet and asked if she was in the wrong for ditching the funeral of her partner’s grandmother so she could go to a concert.
Taking to Reddit, she explained that she was working in a music department for the military and their big concert happened to be on the same day as the funeral.
“I am the lead trumpet player with no one to step in if I am absent not to mention my bosses will be extremely upset with me as it is not MY biological grandmother’s funeral,” she wrote on Reddit.
“My partner is aware of this but is still deeply hurt that I am choosing this concert over him. Am I the a***ole?”
Reddit users were shocked by her decision, with one person commenting: “You’re the a***ole. It’s not about their grandmother, it’s about your partner, and you are choosing a trumpet solo over them. Funerals are rarely convenient.”
Another said: “Sounds to me you didn’t even try asking for time off to attend the funeral. For that, you’re the a***ole.”
A third added: “You’re the a***ole if you didn’t even ask for bereavement leave. You might not get the leave, but it would show your partner that you tried everything you could to be there with them on the day of the funeral. ‘My CO ordered me to stay and play’ rings differently than ‘I want to be the lead trumpet in this concert.’”
