A mother who got kicked in the stomach while putting her baby in the car has revealed that she only has months left to live after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.
41-year-old Sheena Hardman said she was diagnosed with bowel cancer but had no idea about her condition until she started experiencing stomach pains after getting kicked in the stomach outside their family home.
The mother, who underwent a c-section, was putting her baby in the car when she was attacked in November last year.
Sheena first thought that the pains had been caused by the surgery but doctors later discovered that she had three tumors in her bowel, and one of them had already spread to her lymph nodes.
Despite undergoing treatment to shrink the tumors, she received the devastating news that she would only have a few months to live.
Speaking to ECHO, her heartbroken sister Shelley Harrison, 38, said: “She was kicked in the stomach and obviously because she’d had a C-section she just assumed the pains after the attack were related to that and went to A&E.”
Shelley continued: “They basically said where she was having pain from the attack, it wouldn’t really be an after affect of the C-section.
“It wasn’t really in the right place and she wouldn’t have pains where she was experiencing them.”
A scan followed by a biopsy revealed three cancerous tumors in her bowel, with one having spread to her lymph nodes.
“The treatment was seeing if they could tackle the smaller tumor and help to shrink the bigger one, and then they could understand what the next steps would be,” Shelley said.
“I think she was just numb to begin with. She just had a little baby girl who is now 14 months old.”
The first round of chemo was successful but Sheena contracted sepsis and a series of other infections.
As she was unable to continue with treatment, her cancer doubled in size.
The mother the made the devastating decision to start putting memory boxes for her two children and has also purchased gifts to mark their birthdays and milestones in life.
Shelley has decided to create a GoFundMe page to help Sheena, her husband Chris, and their young children.
“To think that everyone is going through a hard time financially and people have still got funds to donate. There’s people on [the fundraising page] that I don’t even know that have donated a big chunk of money,” Sheena expressed.
“It makes you realize there’s so many nice people out there.”
