The family of Gabby Petito’s boyfriend Brian Laundrie has issued a statement after a body was discovered at Spread Creek Campground in Bridger-Teton National Forest.
“The news about Gabby Petito is heartbreaking,” lawyer Steven Bertolino expressed in a statement released on the behalf of Laundrie’s family.
“The Laundrie family prays for Gabby and her family.”
23-year-old Laundrie, who refused to cooperate in the investigation and is named the ‘person of interest,’ has disappeared from his parents’ Florida home where he returned after their trip.
The statement issued on Sunday is the first public comment the Laundries have made since Tuesday. This comes after human remains were found on the eastern edge of the Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming.
Authorities believe the body is that of Petito but an autopsy is set for Tuesday to confirm the identity and determine the cause of death.
It was on September 11 when 22-year-old Petito was reported missing by her concerned family. She had been traveling with her fiancé since July and her last conversation with her relatives was on August 25.
On September 1, Laundrie came back to Florida alone in their 2012 Ford Transit van.
He was uncooperative in the investigation and refused to talk to detectives to help solve Petito’s disappearance.
In a statement to Daily Mail on September 14, the Laundrie family’s attorney Steven Bertolino said that “this is an extremely difficult time for both the Petito family and the Laundrie family.”
“I understand that a search has been organized for Miss Petito in or near Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming,” he insisted.
“On behalf of the Laundrie family it is our hope that the search for Miss Petito is successful and that Miss Petito is re-united with her family. On the advice of counsel the Laundrie family is remaining in the background at this juncture and will have no further comment.”
