Grieving parents recalled placing their deceased baby in a makeshift cuddle cot to spend more time with him after his passing.

Their joy, however, didn’t last long. At the age of just 12 days, Thomas died of cardiac arrest after contracting a viral infection.

Desperate to spend more time with their little bundle of joy, Sam and Alice decided to create a makeshift cuddle cot using frozen peas to preserve their son’s body and spend a few more days with him before his funeral.

As the couple revealed, they asked their son’s hospital for a cuddle cot which comes with a cooling mattress designed to preserve the bodies of stillborn babies or deceased newborn babies.

Since none was available, they decided to design one on their own using bags of frozen peas.

Heartbroken by the loss of her child, Alice said she could have “held him forever” as she said she wanted the family’s journey home from the hospital to never end.

She also said taking their dead son home for a few days rather than leaving him in the hospital allowed the couple to make more memories with little Thomas before he was laid to rest.

Following Thomas’ funeral, the boy’s parents launched a fundraiser for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital’s The Snowdrop Suite in hopes of raising enough funds for them to buy another cuddle cot.

“There is nothing that will make losing a child ok, but having the right support afterward is the key to surviving this nightmare and that’s exactly what the snowdrop team help with,” Alice and Sam said.
