A 97-year-old woman died of a ‘broken heart’ only months after she was photographed sitting in her flooded home in Kentucky.
Mae Amburgey reportedly passed away three months after her picture went viral on social media, her grieving granddaughter Missy Amburgey Crovetti said.
The grandmother was rescued from her flood-ravaged home along with three others when historic flash flooding hit the state and swept away vehicles and homes.
Despite being rescued, the ordeal was just too much for the grandmother to bear.
Amburgey’s home could no longer be salvaged and the 97-year-old fell into despair.
“I feel she died of a broken heart,” Crovetti said on a GoFundMe page that was initially setup to help her grandmother recover from the tragedy.
“While our hearts are completely broken, we are also relieved that she is no longer in pain.”
A video showed the moment Amburgey and her son were pulled through deep, filthy brown water. The grandmother had to swim to safety until she reached the boats and was later admitted to a hospital.
When she came back to her home, she realized that everything had been destroyed by the flood.
Crovetti setup a GoFundMe page to help her grandmother recover. She wrote at that time: “Her house is a total mess and like so many from the area, she may not have flood insurance.
“Any help would be greatly appreciated. She never lived outside of Ermine, Kentucky and would very much like to stay home.”
Three months later, Amburgey died of a broken heart.
Gov. Andy Besear said at a press conference on Thursday that the death toll in Kentucky rose to 43 after two more people passed away from health complications.
