A four-year-old girl who was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer was given only six to eight weeks to live.
Delany Krings from Pewaukee, Wisconsin, received the diagnosis on October 31, leaving her parents Jack and Heather devastated.
They are now determined to make her fifth birthday special as it may be her last.
Family friend Sharon Tomlinson helped by spreading the story on social media and her office also volunteered to collect birthday cards for Delany.
Speaking with Today, Heather revealed that her daughter received ‘hundreds and hundreds’ of letters.
The young girl has been overwhelmed with all the support and love she has received. Even though she only has enough energy to read up to five cards, her parents read the rest to her, especially those that play music as they light her up.
“It’s a little overwhelming. She’s got so much love pouring in,” the mother-of-three said.
“There’s no way that we would be able to put her through opening thousands of cards per day.
“We pick out a handful and open them for her. Cards that play music are a favorite.”
Heather also revealed that her daughter has received homemade items and Amazon gifts.
Support and love for the four-year-old has poured in from all over the world.
NFL star JJ Watt also took to Twitter and wrote: “Happy (early) 5th Birthday Delany! From Arizona back home to Pewaukee. I hope you have a fantastic birthday surrounded by family and friends!”
Delany also received a message from research scientists in Antarctica, who sent an email as it could take ‘months to receive a card from Antarctica.’
Toys, cards, and her favorite snack fill her hospital room.
Heather said that the town is coming together to organize a parade for Delany’s birthday.
“There is going to be a horse and carriage, first responders, some local dance teams and dog groups,” she said, adding that her daughter will also indulge in her favorite sweet treats like cake and hot cocoa.
A family friend also said to Spectrum News: “This community from here to around the world is banning together to try and make a difference.”
