A 10-year-old girl who passed away after battling cancer for many years had planned her own funeral and ‘thought about it all’.
Crystal Smith was only 6 years old when she started experiencing agonizing pains in her stomach and legs.
A blood test then revealed that she was severely anemic and further tests found that she had high-risk neuroblastoma.
Crystal started getting treatment, including chemotherapy, rounds of radiotherapy, and immunotherapy before being given a bone marrow transplant.
But only a year after she had gone into remission, the cancer had returned.
Her mother Sabrina Amor, 38, said that they had to wait three more months before her daughter could receive treatment as there was higher chances of it working if the cancer was more widespread to be attacked.
“She was 10 when she passed away but it was like she was older. She was already planning her own funeral. She wanted to be buried with her nan. She had thought about it all,” she said.
“She wanted a horse-drawn carriage, and I would tell her to hang on, but that is what she was like, she knew what she wanted,” the grieving mother continued.
“She was still fiery and feisty. If you had met her, you knew it, you couldn’t forget her.”
Sabrina said her son talks about her big sister every day, saying that he is playing with Crystal.
“He will say oh I’m just playing with Crystal. Every day he says ‘morning baby girl, good night’, he has helped me so much,” she added.
Throughout her treatment, Crystal was supported by Cardiff charity Dreams & Wishes. She was taken on a day trip to Harry Potter Studios, Lego Land, and Downing Street, and given a laptop to stay in touch with her friends.
The charity also arranged for her final wish of having a horse carriage drawn at her funeral.
