A 7-year-old girl tragically died in agony after her mother faked her medical health problems for five long years.
Olivia Grant had faced years of tests and strong medications, making more than 1,000 hospital visits and life-changing operations, including her small intestine being rerouted.
It all started in 2012 when Olivia was taken to a hospital because of severe constipation. Doctors removed the hardened stool stuck in her colon and she returned home.
Her mother, Kelly Renee Turner, then told doctors that her daughter found it difficult to eat and struggled to digest her food. But her observation led to fake medical issues that dominated the young girl’s life.
The mother lied to doctors and insisted that Olivia was having seizures, so she was put on strong medication.
Turner eventually said that Olivia’s feeding tubes stopped working and the girl was given an intravenous tube that fed nutrients directly into her veins, leaving the child bedridden.
The mother then documented her daughter’s journey on social media. She also set up a GoFundMe page that received over $20,000 donations from loved ones and kindhearted people.
Turner also claimed that Olivia was dealing with other conditions, such as fluid on her brain, developmental delays, and autism.
In 2017, Turner told Olivia’s supporters that there was no cure for her daughter’s conditions.
She also switched to a different doctor who was willing to sign a Do Not Resuscitate order on her daughter so she could ‘die in peace.’
Turner also asked their supporters to help Olivia complete her bucket list before she died.
The Make-a-Wish foundation organized a party where the young girl fulfilled her dream of being a ‘Bat Princess.’ She also became a national celebrity overnight, featuring on news reports after taking photos with first responders.
In July, Turner managed to convince doctors to withdraw all medical care and Olivia was taken to a hospice where she spent her final days in agonizing pain.
According to reports, Olivia sang her favorite Disney songs until she became quieter as she starved to death.
Olivia died on August 20 and the cause of death was ‘intestinal failure as a complication of her multiple medical conditions.’
In 2018, Turner told doctors that another daughter was suffering bone pain. She also claimed that she previously had cancer and she feared that it had returned.
But when doctors found no records of a cancer diagnosis and medics concluded that nothing was wrong with the girl, it made them start to question Olivia’s case.
An autopsy revealed that there was no intestinal failure and that Olivia didn’t have other medical problems.
Turner defrauded the Medicaid system of over $538,000 and subjected Olivia to unnecessary surgical procedures for fake illnesses.
In February, Turner was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
