A woman has sought advice on the internet after kicking her cousin from her baby’s funeral.
As the 26-year-old woman in question [let’s call her Mary] revealed in her Reddit post, she was very close with her cousin, Emily, when they were younger.
Though they eventually grew apart, the pair reconnected after Mary fell pregnant. Sadly, Mary’s baby daughter, Stella, died from sudden infant death syndrome when she was just two months old.
Shaken and devastated by their daughter’s sudden passing, Mary and her husband plunged into a deep depression.
While her husband always stood by her side during this painful period, Mary allegedly received no supporting messages from her cousin.
When it was time to lay Stella to rest, Emily appeared at the funeral only to make the process even worse for the grieving parents by announcing her own pregnancy.
“When my cousin showed up to the funeral, she told me she was so sorry for my loss and she gave me a hug. I noticed she was holding her hand under her stomach and her stomach had gotten a little bigger since I last saw her. She saw me looking at my stomach so she said, ‘surprise! I’m pregnant!’” Mary wrote.
Not knowing how to react to her cousin’s news, Mary moved away and kept on crying throughout the service.
After she finally managed to calm down, Emily reappeared and, once again, made the matters worse.
“She put her hand on her stomach and popped it out a little. She said something along the lines of ‘it breaks my heart to think that the same thing could happen to my little angel. I can’t imagine what you’re going through. Me and Anthony are so blessed to have a healthy baby so far,’” Mary recalled.
“I was shocked. I started off by telling her my baby didn’t die because it was unhealthy. It died from a sickness we couldn’t control. And second, she could get the f*** out.”
While Emily initially refused to leave, Mary allegedly got her to go away after a few minutes of arguing.
Following the funeral, Mary and her husband received mixed responses from her family, with some family members saying that she was overreacting and that Emily didn’t mean anything bad.
Since the drama at the funeral, Mary has found herself in a tough position not knowing if she was in the right and if she should try and patch things between her and her cousin.
After asking Reddit users for advice, the 26-year-old received loads of support with most people being baffled by her cousin’s ignorance.
“She was thoughtless and unkind. Unless she has some kind of mental illness or developmental issues, what she said and did was unforgivable,” one person wrote.
Another said: “Whilst I doubt she was deliberately being hurtful the level of tone deafness here is truly astonishing. I would have thrown her out too.”
