A couple with two young children were left devastated after they were both diagnosed with stage four cancer.
Laura Tomelloso, a retired Department of Justice officer, was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer while her husband Michael, an LAPD Central Traffic Division officer, was told that had stage four throat cancer.
Speaking to KNBC, a friend of the family said: “It’s devastating, and for (Laura) — going through that to find out your spouse is also going to be dealing with that.”
According to reports, Laura’s colon cancer has since spread to ovarian cancer.
The LAPD Central Traffic Division said that the couple have two sons, Matthew, 10, and Mike Jr., 14.
“During their battle with cancer, which consists of ongoing medical treatments, surgeries and hospitalizations, they have an exhausted challenge in completing simple tasks,” the police said in a statement.
“They have been relying on friends, neighbors and church members in making life less challenging with their daily tasks and making their medical appointments, and to make Mike Jr. and Matthew’s childhood as positive as possible.”
The Central Traffic Division, Matthew has special needs and is home-schooled. He also works with horses as part of therapy but he stopped attending his therapy sessions because of his parents condition.
A Blue Ribbon trust fund account has been set up to help raise money for the family.
LAPD Officer Bryce Verna said to KABC: “Knowing what type of person he is and a family man, he was a Marine and he’s been a police officer for over 25 years and been married over 25 years to his wife.
“And to actually — not one person but two people go through that — it’s pretty much lottery odds.”
