An 8-year-old boy who was left paralyzed after his spine was hit by a bullet in the Highland Park parade massacre feels ‘hopeless, sad, and angry’ as he struggles to come to terms with his condition.
Cooper Roberts’ spine was severed when 21-year-old Robert Crimo shot through his abdomen in July 4 parade shooting, leaving him in constant pain and internal damage.
“Cooper is in constant pain. It is agonizing to see,” his heartbroken family wrote on GoFundMe.
“He still has internal damage – wounds that are slow to heal,” Cooper’s family added.
His parents provided updates since he was shot, sharing heart-shattering details of the injuries that left him paralyzed.
But his family also said that the messages of support he has received from many people make Cooper happy.
Photos of the 8-year-old show him smiling in a wheelchair as he was reunited with his dog George.
Cooper’s family said that they are sharking the depths of the young boy’s struggles for the world to see what really happens to shooting victims.
“There are layers upon layers of cruelty with being shot by a sniper. Most people don’t witness the grueling aftermath of surviving these devastating wounds, physical and emotional,” they wrote.
They also said that they are focusing on hope and optimism. “We want people to know the unvarnished reality which is his/our new world.”
Cooper’s twin brother, Luke, and their mother, Keely, were also shot during the massacre, which took the lives of seven people.
Luke was also rushed to a hospital with shrapnel wounds but returned home after doctors managed to remove some of the debris.
Keely underwent at least two surgeries after the incident but she was more worried about her son that she insisted on being discharged from the hospital early.
